PETALING JAYA: Umno has to be pragmatic and accept the reality that no political party will be able to win an election on its own, said Salleh Said Keruak.
Instead, the former federal minister said Muafakat Nasional (MN), the party’s alliance with PAS, would be an effective and successful platform.
“To ensure political stability, we should focus on improving MN and rope in a new partner,” the former Sabah chief minister said in a Facebook post.
Salleh said this was the target Umno and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah – the ruling coalition in the state – hoped to achieve as they were focused on serving the people and developing the state.
The former Sabah chief minister’s stance comes a day after Umno played down a meeting with PAS leaders as a casual get-together and denied talk that the two parties would join forces in the upcoming Melaka state election.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had previously hinted that MN – a pact forged between the two largest Malay parties in 2019 – was dead.
Zahid also said it was time to move on from MN after the Islamist party decided to back Bersatu.
However, he said the party would not give up on the “real MN” if PAS was prepared to do the same. - FMT
