Ten former Mara Corporation senior directors and executives have gone to the Industrial Court over their alleged unfair dismissal.
In a media statement today, their lawyers from law firm Messrs Bhavanash Sharma said that the dismissals via Mara Corp's cessation of employment letter dated Jan 28 last year was "unjust and unlawful".
They claimed that the dismissal was across the board of industry experts hired by then company group CEO Badlisyah Abdul Gani, who was purportedly asked to go on garden leave and then dismissed.
"Mara Corporation had dismissed said employees, citing redundancy as their main reason, in addition to asserting that these employees' appointments by Badlisyah vide fixed-term contracts, had supposedly not been budgeted for and/or approved in accordance with the company's limits of authority," the press briefing claimed.
The ex-employees said that they are seeking several reliefs through the case filed with the Industrial Court under Section 20 of the Industrial Relations Act, amongst others, that they are compensated for the remainder of their fixed-term contracts.
The Industrial Court has fixed March 21 for the next case management of the matter.
According to Mara Corporation's official web portal, it was established in 2016 as the impact economy investment holding company of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), with the objective of managing and developing Mara's commercial entities under a single entity.
The online portal said that as an impact economy investor, Mara Corporation creates and develops investments in key sectors to deliver scalable and sustainable financial returns that shape industries and deliver socio-economic outcomes. - Mkini
