KUALA LUMPUR: Thirteen men, including a private school teacher, a gym instructor and an insurance agent, were fined a total of RM142,000 after they pleaded guilty for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The 13, aged between 30 and 60, were each fined between RM10,000 and RM13,000 and were imposed a mandatory jail term ranging from a day to four days.
They will be sent to Kajang prison to serve their custodial sentence.
Magistrate Amanina Mohamad Anuar also disqualified them from driving for two years from today.
The offenders, who were unrepresented, said in mitigation that they were unemployed, married with children and had families to support.
They committed the offences between last year and last month in the city.
Inspectors Abdullah Khazali and Dzulkarnain Junos prosecuted.
Friends and family members were present to settle the fines, failing which they would have to serve a further jail term between six and seven months.
A court staff said there were variations in their sentences because of the different levels of alcohol in their bloodstream.
Stiffer penalties against those who drive under the influence of alcohol came into force on Oct 23, 2020 following amendments to Section 45A of the Road Transport Act.
Those convicted for the first time may be fined between RM10,000 and RM30,000, jailed up to two years and disqualified from driving for two years.
Previously, it was a fine of between RM1,000 and RM6,000, a jail sentence of up to one year and a driving ban for a maximum of 12 months.
Under the amendments, those whose alcohol level is 50mg per 100ml of blood while driving under the influence have run afoul of the law.
Previously, it was 80mg per 100ml of blood. - FMT
