Former national diver Leong Mun Yee and Paralympic gold medallist Abdul Latif Romly have been granted the title of "Datuk" after being conferred the Panglima Mahkota Wilayah (PMW) award.
The duo received the award from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah at Istana Negara today in conjunction with the Federal Territories Day celebration which fell on Feb 1.
The award was highlighted by Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu who congratulated them on Facebook.
"May the award spur all athletes to bring the country's name to a higher level," he said.
Leong, 27, retired on Dec 31 last year. She won the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games 2010 in India and the bronze medal at the Asian Games 2014 in South Korea. She also bagged two gold medals during the SEA Games 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.
Latif won the gold medal and broke the world record in the T20 Long Jump category at the Paralympic Games 2016 in Rio De Janeiro.
He won gold again in the Tokyo Paralympics Games 2020.
Meanwhile, Paralympic sprinter Mohamad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi was granted the Johan Mahkota Wilayah award while national shuttlers Aaron Chia Teng Fong and Soh Wooi Yik were granted the Kesatria Mahkota Wilayah award.
The Johan and Kesatria awards do not carry a title. - Mkini
