Ceramahs, house calls allowed for Johor polls campaign

 

The Election Commission says a maximum of 100 people are allowed at an election ceramah.

PETALING JAYA: Restricted ceramahs and house visits will be allowed for the Johor elections campaign, the Election Commission (EC) said today, announcing its rules for the March 12 elections.

Only 100 attendees are allowed at ceramahs, which will be limited to two hours and cannot go on beyond 10pm. They can be held only at party headquarters or operations centre.

Organisers must apply for a police permit.

House calls would be limited to a group of five who must don face masks and practise physical distancing. “They are not allowed to enter homes and meet with residents inside,” the EC said.

The EC said candidates are encouraged to use social media to conduct their campaigns.

Voters in Johor go to the polls on March 12. Nominations will be accepted on Feb 26.

Other do’s and don’ts for the campaign

Polling Day

• Voters must sanitise their hands when entering or leaving polling centres. Face masks must be worn at all times
• A self-test kit will be provided by the EC for election workers and voters who display symptoms.
• Only five party observers are allowed at polling centres.

Campaigning

• Those who test positive or are close contacts are barred from going on walkabouts. Physical distancing of one metre must be observed and face masks worn.
• Any form of entertainment is not allowed.
• Only packed food can be distributed.

Nomination Day

• Candidates and proposers who display symptoms must be isolated and placed in a special room. Only those who test negative for Covid-19 will be allowed into the nomination centre. - FMT
