Covid-19 booster shots mandatory for umrah from Feb 14

Pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia to perform umrah will be required to get a Covid-19 booster shot before travelling.

This is a part of new Covid-19 standard operating procedures that will be enforced beginning Feb 14.

It comes as umrah pilgrimages resume today following a one-month suspension to slow the spread of the Omicron Covid-19 variant into Malaysia.

“The government knows some pilgrims had departed for the Holy Land today. Therefore, umrah pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia from today until Feb 13 are bound by the existing SOPs.

“However, they are required to follow the new SOPs upon their return,” Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein (above) said today, in his capacity as the chairperson of the Covid-19 ministerial quartet.

Apart from requiring booster shots, the person-in-charge from travel agencies are required to monitor pilgrims’ compliance with SOPs throughout the journey starting from international gateways in Malaysia.

Upon return, pilgrims may undergo home quarantine without applying for approval to do so.

However, they may also opt to undergo quarantine at private quarantine stations at their own expense. - Mkini
