Field 30% women candidates in Johor, says Wanita Umno

PETALING JAYA: Women should comprise at least 30% of Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidates for the Johor state elections, a member of the Wanita Umno leadership, Mastura Mohd Yazid, said today.

She said setting the 30% benchmark would give BN an advantage at the elections, especially in winning the support of women and young voters. It would also motivate women members who will be working on election machinery for the state elections, she said in a Facebook post.

Mastura said that it is well-known that Wanita Umno is the party’s most valuable “weapon” in every election.

She added that the selection of women candidates must be done based on their merits and ability to serve as elected representatives, not on party positions and party lobbying.

“In other words, let the selection of women candidates for BN reflect the real capabilities of the women in our country,” she said. “We have a lot of capable Johorean women who are able to contribute to the development of the state if they were given the trust,” she said. - FMT
