Kedah Umno has slammed Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor by calling his recent attack on Umno an excuse to undermine Muafakat Nasional.
Kedah Umno secretary Hashim Jahiya said that Sanusi's actions in disparaging BN in the state showed that he no longer appreciated Muafakat.
He said that Sanusi's moves ran contrary to the spirit of the PAS "fatwa" which is supposedly to strengthen Muafakat.
"It is clear that all the accusations by the Kedah MB are akin to an excuse to bring down Muafakat, not strengthen it.
"Perhaps his statement is also intended to obscure the eyes of PAS supporters in Johor who reportedly prefer Muafakat.
"After strengthening ties with Umno-BN in the Tanjung Piai by-election, many PAS supporters were confused when the Kedah MB taught them to fight with Umno-BN. Instead, he called on them to support Bersatu who 'cheated' them in the 14th general election (GE14)," Hashim said in a statement today.
The dispute between PAS and Umno has become heated again after leaders from both parties criticised each other ahead of the Johor polls.
Recently, Sanusi, who is also the PAS election director, was reported to have said that political stability could only be achieved if Umno and BN were blocked from returning to power.
When officiating the Pulai area Perikatan Nasional (PN) election officials assembly in Johor yesterday, Sanusi said that after gaining power, Umno-BN had a tendency to trigger state elections.
Kedah Umno needs to re-evaluate relationship
Merbok Umno division deputy chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin asked Kedah Umno to re-assess its ties with PAS.
"Based on this position, I believe there is a need for Kedah Umno to re-evaluate its relationship with PAS.
“It is unproductive if we constantly try to pretend that we can work together, when what is seen every day is friction that seems insurmountable.
"Both parties must be firm and clear in their respective positions,” he said.
“If they want to choose different directions, state it. If they want to continue to work together, behave in a way that reflects that intention, and not the other way around," he added.
Sanusi was elected Kedah menteri besar in 2020 after the Pakatan Harapan state government led by Mukhriz Mahathir fell.
He has the support of 23 assemblypersons in the Kedah state assembly.
PAS has 15 seats and is supported by Bersatu which has six seats making the total number of elected representatives under the PN coalition 21 people.
Umno has two assemblypersons in Kedah and is technically unable to overthrow the state government which only needs 19 seats to form a simple majority. - Mkini
