Kelantan tops ICU, non-ICU bed utilisation for Covid-19

KUALA LUMPUR: Occupancy rates at non-Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds for Covid-19 cases in 12 states are above 50 per cent as of yesterday.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the highest was in Kelantan where it exceeded the capacity at 101 per cent.

Beds utilisation in Selangor was at 97 per cent; Perak (90 per cent); Kuala Lumpur (87 per cent); Perlis (81 per cent); Putrajaya (77 per cent); Johor (75 per cent); Pahang and Sabah (71 per cent); Penang, Terengganu and Sarawak (52 per cent).

ICU utilisation for Covid-19 cases in five states was over 50 per cent, said Dr Noor Hisham.

"Kelantan was the highest at 83 per cent; Kuala Lumpur and Johor at 65 per cent; Melaka (58 per cent); and Perlis (55 per cent)," he said in a statement today.

He also said Covid-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centres (PKRC) in three states were reported at more than 50 per cent occupancy.

They are - Perak at 74 per cent, Melaka at 60 per cent and Selangor at 54 per cent.

Dr Noor Hisham explained that there were differences between the daily data of Covid-19 hospitalisations and Categories 1 to 5 cases.

He said this was due to the dynamic clinical condition of the patient, where their situation could worsen or improve over time.

For instance, those who were originally designated to Category 2A and isolated at home under Home Surveillance Order (HSO), their condition could worsen to Category 3 or higher and they would need to be admitted.

At the same time, he said high risk cases of Covid-19 from Categories 1 and 2 were also admitted to PKRCs and hospital as precautionary measures.

"On Feb 23, Covid-19 cases admitted to hospitals were 1,804 with 621 from Categories 3 to 5 while the remaining 1,183 were in Categories 1 and 2," he said. - NST
