Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is set to make several important announcements related to the Covid-19 Omicron variant in a press conference this evening, amid a surge in Covid-19 cases in the past few days.
“Some key Omicron updates at my weekly press conference at 5pm today,” he said in a posting on Twitter today.
This comes as the daily number of Covid-19 cases yesterday (Jan 6) breached the 10,000 mark for the first time since Oct 2, with a total of 10,089 new cases.
Khairy previously cautioned that the worst is yet to come due to the spread of the Omicron variant.
He thus urged those who have yet to receive their Covid-19 vaccine booster dose, particularly the elderly who are more vulnerable, to do so.
“Fully into Omicron wave. (Daily) cases will reach 15,000 soon.
“There are still one million senior citizens who have yet to receive their booster dose. Please inform your elderly loved ones to immediately get their booster dose,” Khairy had said.
The infectivity rate of Covid-19 stood at 1.2 as of yesterday. A sustained value above 1.0 leads to an exponential spread of the virus.
Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah had also said if the infectivity rate remains at 1.2, the number of daily Covid-19 cases will reach 22,000 by the end of March. - Mkini
