A lawyer has called on the MACC to conduct a probe regarding allegations that former attorney-general Tommy Thomas had inappropriately let off tycoon Vincent Tan's son from a drug charge.
Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla (above) said the cops must probe the whistleblower, the police, prosecutors, and anyone else involved in the case.
"Whether or not the allegations are true, seeing how there is an expose and a denial by Thomas, this must be investigated.
"Thomas' quick response is lauded, but it does not mean that his statement puts the case to rest," he said in a Facebook video today.
On the need to probe the whistleblower, Haniff said it is to determine whether information in this case had been furnished to the authorities as is required for protection under the Whistleblower Protection Act.
The Edisi Khas Twitter account alleged today that one of Tan's sons was arrested on a drug charge in 2019 but that Thomas had decided to classify the case as "no further action" (NFA).
In response, Thomas said that after Tan's son was charged, lawyers for the accused had submitted written representation to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC).
After discussing the matter with the prosecution team, the former attorney-general said he had reduced the charges.
Thomas denied there was any corruption involved in his decision.
It is understood that Tan's son was sentenced on Feb 10, 2020, by a Kuala Lumpur magistrate. At the time, Malaysiakini had attempted to secure the charge sheet from the deputy public prosecutor, who declined the request.
Edisi Khas claimed the charge was reduced from possession to testing positive for drugs. - Mkini
