PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said it has submitted 10 investigation papers on the alleged misappropriation of Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) funds to its prosecution team for further action.

Chief commissioner Azam Baki said he is waiting for the MACC’s deputy public prosecutor to go through the evidence and investigation papers.

“We hope it can be brought to court soon,” he told FMT.

However, he said the investigation was still ongoing to identify more people involved in the Mitra funds scandal.

“The investigation is ongoing and before the Chinese New Year holiday, we were very aggressive in getting witnesses,” he said.

Last October, MACC arrested 18 people from 10 companies and NGOs suspected of being involved in the misappropriation of Mitra funds. Last month, the agency arrested another 22 individuals in seven states.

Mitra approved RM203 million in grants from 2019 to 2021 to 337 companies, associations and NGOs.

The MACC investigation follows a query by Klang MP Charles Santiago to national unity minister Halimah Sadique to explain where RM9.1 million in funds from Mitra had been spent. - FMT
