Fast-food chain McDonald's Malaysia today said it will take "appropriate action" against a restaurant manager who sent demeaning text messages to a crew member with a learning disability.
This comes after a screenshot of the manager's text messages went viral on social media, exposed by a brother of the affected crew member.
"With reference to a recent incident at a McDonald's outlet in Seremban, we have conducted an immediate and thorough internal investigation to address the matter.
"We are able to confirm that the behaviour of the specific restaurant manager was found to be unacceptable and in violation of our policy on diversity and inclusion.
"Appropriate action will be taken against the said individual," the company said
Earlier this week, Facebook user Muhammad Hanis posted a lengthy account of what he claimed as mistreatment by a McDonald's store manager towards his brother, who suffers from dyslexia.
According to him, the incident started when the restaurant management put his brother as working on the duty roster but had only referred to him by his staff number instead of his name.
The roster was also sent out at 1am on Feb 13, stating that his brother was on duty at 9am the same morning, causing the latter to miss the assignment.
"That morning, a manager asked my brother why he hadn't shown up for work. It was then pointed out that my brother's staff number was listed as working.
"My father then replied on behalf of my brother saying that his name is Mohd Aniq, and not just a number.
"After that, we went out and only after we arrived home that I saw a manager had replied to the message saying: 'If you are not a number then make sure my (restaurant) lobby is properly kept and the brooms are not left around. A human being would understand this, but a number would not because it is more stupid'," according to Hanis.
The Facebook post has since been shared over 4,500 times. - Mkini
