PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak plans to sue Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin for defamation after the PKR information chief claimed that the Pekan MP had stolen RM2.6 billion in 1MDB funds to support his lifestyle.
In denying Shamsul’s claim, the former prime minister argued that he was not charged with misappropriating funds but rather with money laundering.
Shamsul, who is Hang Tuah Jaya MP, had made the claim on Facebook where he also accused former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner and fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) of using the public’s money to support their lifestyle.
Najib also said he was facing seven charges of money laundering because the sum was returned to the sender four months after he received it.
“So how is it possible for me to keep RM2.6 billion to fund my lifestyle?” he asked in a Facebook post.
He went on to say that despite what had been proven in court, the opposition continued to push its propaganda that he had misappropriated RM2.6 billion to purchase “rings and handbags”.
Najib is standing trial on 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering over alleged 1MDB funds amounting to over RM2 billion deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014. - FMT
