New voters a ‘major issue’ in Johor polls, says Tok Mat

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan says BN is studying how to win over the 750,000 new voters eligible to take part in the upcoming Johor elections.

KUALA LUMPUR: The addition of about 750,000 voters to the electoral roll for the upcoming Johor elections should be a major issue for all political parties and not just Barisan Nasional, says the coalition’s deputy chairman, Mohamad Hasan.

Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, said these 750,000 voters were a massive addition to the 1.8 million voters who had cast their ballots in the 2018 general election.

“That’s a huge increase and it’s a very major issue for all parties, not just BN, to evaluate and study the attitude of these new voters.

“But don’t misunderstand this issue. Of these 750,000 new voters, not all are aged 18 to 21.

“There are not many aged 18 to 21. They don’t even make up 30% (of the new voters). Most of them are aged 21 and above, which means that prior to this, they didn’t care (to vote).

“They did not vote or register. So, BN is studying how to win them over in the upcoming state elections,” he said at an event here today.

Mohamad said Umno had shortlisted a list of candidates who could be fielded for the state polls, adding that he was told that other component parties had finished doing so, too.

The Umno deputy president said the BN Supreme Council would meet soon to negotiate the distribution of seats.

Earlier, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan was reported as saying that several Johor party divisions had applied to contest in seats contested by other BN components previously.

Mohamad said BN would also be working hard to win more seats in the northern area of Johor, stating that there were 16 state constituencies there. Of these, the coalition wants to win 12.

He said BN had only managed to win two of these 16 seats in the last general election, with opposing parties winning by a thin majority. - FMT
