Nooryana: Leissner got me an intern job, I was just the PowerPoint girl

Nooryana Najwa Najib, the daughter of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, has confirmed that she did try to get a job with Goldman Sachs.

However, she was told that it could be a conflict of interest because the multinational investment bank was doing business with the Malaysian government.

In a Facebook post yesterday, Nooryana confirmed that she had once met two former Goldman Sachs employees - Roger Ng and Tim Leissner.

Describing them as banking professionals, she alluded that she got to know them as part of her networking efforts to land a "competitive job".

Nooryana said she was keen on Goldman Sachs because she wanted a role involving finance and government policy as she studied international politics and foreign policy at university.

"Yes, I did inquire if Goldman Sachs had such interdisciplinary roles. I was prepared to interview for them.

"And yes, I was told that Goldman Sachs does business with the government of Malaysia so it could be a conflict of interest," she wrote.

Leissner ‘introduced’ Nooryana to TPG

Following this, Nooryana said Leissner "introduced" her to TPG - a private equity firm. The company, she said, suited her background in policy.

"I interviewed for an intern analyst position at the TPG London office.

"Yes, an intern. This meant you're at the bottom of the food chain. Besides your core job scope, you're also responsible for the spadework.

"You're the PowerPoint girl, the photocopying girl, the coffee girl and the delivery girl just to name a few,” she added.

Nooryana said she worked 11 months as an intern before being promoted to full-time analyst and was transferred to TPG Hong Kong.

She resigned after 18 months to focus on her own business and further studies.

Leissner supportive of job idea

On Feb 22, Leissner told the New York Eastern District Court that he was informed by Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, that Najib wanted his three children to be given jobs at Goldman Sachs.

Leissner said he was supportive of the idea because Najib, as the then prime minister, was "potentially an important person for (Goldman Sachs)".

He said Malaysian business for Goldman Sachs was "one of the best" in "all of Asia".

"So I felt having the children of the prime minister work for us potentially would be seen not just by the prime minister as a positive but also all our other clients in the country would take notice of that and see that we are well connected," he told the court.

Specifically, Leissner said he received Nooryana's CV and later helped get her a job with TPG.

Earlier yesterday, Najib clarified that none of his children was offered jobs by Goldman Sachs.

Leissner is the star witness in the trial against his subordinate Roger Ng, who is accused of money laundering and breaching anti-bribery laws in relation to the 1MDB affair.

Goldman Sachs had organised US$6.5 billion (RM27 billion) in loans for 1MDB - a company which Najib helped set up as finance minister and had powers to decide matters of investment and the hiring of directors.

According to investigators, most of the money raised by 1MDB was squandered.

Following the fall of the Najib administration, Goldman Sachs reached a multi-billion dollar settlement with the Malaysian government. - Mkini
