Not a good day for a 'dream wedding': SPM oral question draws ire from social media users

PETALING JAYA: An SPM Bahasa Melayu oral examination question on the "perfect wedding" has drawn brickbats online due to the puzzling choice of topic for those still in their teenage years.

Students were asked, "What is your dream wedding" in one of the questions for the SPM 2021 Bahasa Melayu oral examination, held from Feb 8 to 10, and involving some 401,927 candidates.

A Twitter user with the handle @beomjunie questioned why minors were being asked such a question.

"They expecting a child to answer that question????" @beomjunie said in a tweet.

Another user said that students were told they had to give answers on the wedding ceremony, and not about their future partner or household.

"It was so confusing," a tweet by @farhanaslay read.

Speaking to the New Straits Times, Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) president Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said 17-year-olds should not be thinking of marriage, especially due to the prevalent issue of child marriages and students marrying immediately or shortly after leaving school.

"The oral examination is about articulation and you can say why not, but I think questions should be on more relatable subjects.

"They could have asked what's the right marriageable age instead, or about climate change, recycling, public transport, even Undi18, which directly affects them as some would be among the first batch of 18-year-olds to vote in the Johor state election.

"Since this issue is gaining traction among parents and students, the Malaysian Examinations Syndicate should come up with an articulate explanation as to why they chose this question for the exam," she said.

Sisters In Islam executive director Rozana Isa was quoted by the English daily as saying that it was outrageous that students in the Malaysian school system faced these sorts of questions in the 21st century.

"This question also seems to give emphasis to being marriage-centric, when we should be opening all possibilities to youth and letting them do what they want with their life in the future," she said. - Star
