PAS leader: With right plan, PN can surprise Umno in its southern fortress

JOHOR POLLS | The Perikatan Nasional coalition comprising PAS and Bersatu is capable of dealing a blow to Umno in its southern stronghold of Johor.

However, PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Abdullah (above) said this would hinge on effective planning and mobilisation of PN's election machinery to win over the hearts and minds of voters.

He believes that the coalition can bag numerous seats, especially those with a high number of new voters, in the March 12 state election.

If things proceeded according to plan, Amar is confident that PN could pull off a surprise.

"Our chance in Johor is like in Malacca... but we may have a shot especially since there will be many new voters. There are over 700,000 new voters registered in Johor.

"PN's target is not just the young voters, but they are among the potential ones (for PN to woo) because they are not tied to any party yet. The young voters will vote based on the candidate and current issues, so there is a high chance there.

"So, it all depends on our planning and work. If everything goes well, maybe we can create a surprise," he said in Kota Bharu, Kelantan today.

To set up a joint committee

Amar, who is also the Kelantan deputy menteri besar, said PAS and Bersatu have agreed to combine their election machinery for the Johor polls.

He pointed out that the approach is different compared to the Sabah and Malacca state elections.

"In the Malacca state election, our machineries were running separately.

“We even had different operating rooms. But now we will set up a joint committee so that there will be no problems in coordinating our work," he explained.

The 56-seat Johor state assembly was dissolved on Jan 22 after incumbent Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad obtained the consent of the ruler.

The state government became fragile after the death of Kempas assemblyperson Osman Sapian which left Hasni with just a single majority in the state assembly.

The upcoming polls would also be the first to see 18-year-olds casting their ballots, following the implementation of Undi 18.

Nomination day has been fixed for Feb 26, leading to a 14-day campaign period.

The election, the fourth amid the Covid-19 pandemic, comes as the nation witnessed a sharp spike in positive cases due to the Omicron variant. - Mkini
