COVID-19 | Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is set to announce when Malaysia will reopen its international borders.
“The PM will be announcing the date of the opening of the border.
“We (the government) already have a date and we will leave it to the PM to announce,” said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin when asked about the matter during a press conference this evening.
Khairy did not indicate when the announcement will be made.
In recent weeks, the government has indicated that it is preparing to reopen international borders.
The matter features prominently on Ismail Sabri’s agenda as he makes an official visit to Thailand beginning today.
Last week, Khairy indicated that the border could reopen “early” in the second quarter of 2022.
What is known is that his ministry has been tasked with drawing up border reopening guidelines.
This comes after National Recovery Council chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin recommended that international borders be fully opened on March 1 to aid economic recovery.
The former prime minister proposed that travellers be subject to Covid-19 testing but not mandatory quarantine. - Mkini
