PN deploys senator to take on BN's MB candidate

JOHOR POLLS | Perikatan Nasional (PN) is counting on its Bersatu senator to challenge incumbent Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad, who BN plans to return to the top spot if it wins in the upcoming state polls.

PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin announced Isa Ab Hamid, who is a Bersatu senator representing Johor, will contest in Benut which Hasni won comfortably with a 4,447-vote majority in the last general election.

He is among the 56 candidates PN is fielding comprising 33 from Bersatu, 15 from PAS and eight from Gerakan.

Another notable candidate is Chong Fat Full, who in the last general election won the Pemanis state seat on a PKR ticket but defected to Bersatu after the Sheraton Move that saw the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan federal government and several state administrations.

Chong will be fielded in Tangkak.

In total, only six, or 11 percent of PN candidates are women.

Bersatu's line-up includes non-Malay candidates from among its affiliated members, while PAS also has one non-Muslim candidate from its supporter's wing.

Muhyiddin said PN will announce their menteri besar candidate in the near future. They also plan to unveil their manifesto on March 1.

During his speech, Muhyiddin urged party members to close ranks around their chosen candidate.

He also made a commitment for all candidates to undertake an anti-corruption oath.

"They will take an oath to reject all forms of corruption, abuse of power and to be honest in their duty.

"We have done this during the Malacca polls and PN was the only one which required its candidates to take such an oath," he said during the announcement in Pulai, Johor.

A total of 56 seats in the Johor assembly will be contested in the state polls on March 12. Nomination Day is fixed for Feb 26.
