KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has hit a new record in daily Covid-19 infections after registering 4,373 cases in the past 24 hours.
The previous record was 4,107 cases on Feb 12. Today’s cases were also 339 more than yesterday.
State local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said 522 of the cases today were children under 11.
He said they comprised 208 aged under five, who are yet to be eligible for vaccination, and 314 aged between five and 11, who now qualify for vaccination.
“Hopefully, all children eligible for the vaccine can obtain the shots as soon as possible, in order to give them maximum protection from infections or serious symptoms from the virus,” he said in his Covid-19 analysis report today.
He added that 63% of the cases in the past 24 hours were from sporadic or community infections.
“Taking this into account, new cases are expected to rise in the coming days.”
Masidi said, however, 99.45%, or 4,350 cases, consisted of Category 1 and 2 infections. There are seven cases in Category 3, 10 in Category 4 and seven in Category 5.
He also said that there were two new clusters detected today – the Tembok Kota Kinabalu 2 cluster, which involved the prison in Kepayan here, and the Jubi Tambulion cluster, which involved the SMK Tambulion hostel in Kota Belud.
“The prison cluster was triggered by a 27-year-old inmate. Close contact screening found 103 other inmates and prisons department staff positive for the virus,” he said.
As for the school cluster, he said it was triggered by a 17-year-old male student, adding 21 of his school and hostel mates have so far tested positive as well. - FMT
