KOTA KINABALU: Parents in Sabah were urged to get their children vaccinated as state and Covid-19 daily cases breached the 4,000 mark for the second time in three days.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said out of 4,035 total cases, 272 new patients were among children aged 5 to 11 who should be eligible for vaccination.

"It is highly recommended that parents take the initiative to ensure that their children are vaccinated so that they get maximum protection from Covid-19 virus infection," he said in a statement.

As of yesterday, only 9,686 or 2.35 per cent out of 411,400 children eligible to be vaccinated in Sabah have been inoculated.

"This is a very low number taking into account the high risk of infection as well as the number of children under the age of 11 who are infected with Covid-19 every day."

Masidi said the increase in the daily figure was predicted by taking into account the high percentage of sporadic infections.

"The number of symptomatic cases resulting from sporadic infections is extremely high, 61.07 per cent or 2,464 out of the total cases.

"The high percentage of sporadic infections causing the rapid and widespread spread of the virus, thus doubling the number of cases in a short period," he explained.

Masidi said the number of districts that recorded three-digit cases also increased to 12 today.

Kota Kinabalu topped the list with 910 cases followed by Sandakan (496), Tuaran (388), Tawau (328), Penampang (325), Papar (263), Putatan (200), Lahad Datu (189), Beaufort (134), Ranau (129), Keningau (106) and Kota Belud (106).

However, over 99 per cent of today's cases were in categories One and Two that do not require hospitalisation.

"Some 4,011 or 99.41 per cent out of 4,035 cases were in categories One and Two. There are only seven cases in Category Three, 14 cases in Category Four and three cases in Category Five," he said.

No new cluster was reported today but Sabah registered five deaths – one each in Sandakan, Beaufort, Kuala Penyu, Lahad Datu, and Kota Kinabalu. - NST
