We won’t let people suffer from ‘idiotic actions’, says Muhyiddin

Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said he did not want the people to suffer because of “our idiotic actions”

KUALA LUMPUR: The public will suffer if Perikatan Nasional were to quit the government and cause it to collapse, Muhyiddin Yassin said in defending the coalition’s decision to remain in the current Umno-led administration despite its differences with the party.

Muhyiddin, who is the PN chairman, said the people would not want to face an election during a pandemic.

“I just want to ask you, who here would want to see an election,” he asked reporters at a function this evening.

“We’re not too pleased with the current situation, but Bersatu is looking out for the interest of the people and nation. We don’t want the people to suffer because of our idiotic actions.”

Muhyiddin, who is Bersatu president, said this when asked why PN chose to remain in government despite it being at odds with Umno, which had triggered fresh state assembly elections in Johor.

He said the public would question the party’s intentions in pulling out in the midst of the Omicron wave. “The people will ask, ‘do you want to see us die?’”

In November, Muhyiddin had brushed off a challenge by Umno veteran Shahrir Samad to trigger the Johor polls by withdrawing support for the state government, saying he wasn’t afraid.

This evening, Muhyiddin wondered if everyone had the people’s interest at heart, adding that those who were willing to put the people’s life at risk were irresponsible.

On a separate matter, Muhyiddin said that the seat allocations among PN components for the impending Johor polls might be finalised tomorrow.

There were a few seats that were overlapping with Gerakan, he said.

He also expressed hope that health and safety protocols for the elections would not be too restrictive on campaigning.

“I’m aware about Omicron,” he said, referring to the Covid-19 variant, “but it cannot come to a point where we can’t even campaign. We need to balance it out.” - FMT
