Water levels at the Bukit Merah reservoir in Perak have reached a critical level of 20 feet or 6,096m, triggering a warning for surrounding farmers to prepare alternative reserves.
According to the Kerian Irrigation and Drainage Department, the warning was issued based on the latest reading earlier this morning.
"Reading for the Bukit Merah reservoir was at a critical level, only for water supply operations.
"Therefore, all farmers are urged to make reservoir mods in their paddy fields, as well as to conserve water, for the benefit of all," said the department.
A comparison of satellite radar imagery (below, water surface in dark blue) from the Bukit Merah Dam and its surroundings between August 22 last year and May 25 this year also showed a reduction in the water surface.
Last Friday, in another notice the department said irrigation water will be stopped fully once the level had reached 20 feet, to focus only on supplying raw water for the Gunung Semanggol and Jalan Baru treatment plants.
Earlier in February, Perak Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad said the reduced water level due to a dry weather spell has affected not only paddy farmers but also the manufacturing industry in Taiping - including glove makers. - Mkini
