Reject 'serial defamer' PAS in state polls, says J-Kom chief

Community Communications Department (J-Kom) director-general Mohammad Agus Yusoff urged youths to reject political defaming ahead of the upcoming state elections, citing PAS as a serial offender.

“An election should be a platform to contest ideas and policies, and not about defaming and disseminating fake news.

“By virtue of being an Islamist party, PAS should be setting a good example instead of creating perceptions and making accusations without evidence.

“Criticise if you don’t agree (with the government). Don’t campaign based on slander, racism, insults, and elements that are contrary to Islam,” Agus (above) said in a statement on Facebook today.

He cited various instances the Islamist party has been found guilty of defamation and noted the damages the party had to pay as compensation.

Elaborating, he said the role of an ulama is to encourage people to do good and set an example for Islam to be respected by non-Muslims.

“For the sake of the future generation, reject politics of hate. Focus on building a better Malaysia.”

Agus also noted that spreading fake news is an offence punishable under Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which stipulates a fine of RM50,000, one-year imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.

“An election is about choosing a leader who can elevate our country to a global level and fix our ‘sick economy’, not about choosing a ‘village head’.

“For now, only the 10th prime minister (Anwar Ibrahim) has the best package to carry this responsibility.” - Mkini
