Over 1,300 small projects have been approved under the new Inisiatif Kemudahan Rakyat (IKR), where the public can apply directly for allocations from the Economy Ministry.
The initiative was first announced on June 1 by its minister Rafizi Ramli, who said it was meant to speed up the process of dealing with issues such as fixing clogged drains or potholes on the roads.
As of Aug 25, a total of 1,385 small projects have been approved under this initiative, out of the 3,398 applications received.
“The list of the 1,385 applications has been sent to the relevant local authorities or enforcement agencies for review before the funds are channelled.
“The applications for projects that are still under review (1,768) will be done in the shortest time before being sent to the local authorities for confirmation.
“A total of 245 applications were rejected for not fulfilling the conditions under IKR,” Rafizi (above) said in a statement today.
Best value for money
Among the approved projects include the restoration of roads, drains, mosques, footbridges, bus stops, public toilets, and public halls.
The allocations under this initiative cannot exceed RM200,000 per project and must be used for projects approved this year.
“This initiative is an aid from the federal government and is meant to democratise the government’s funds in funding the implementation of small public infrastructure projects which are under the jurisdiction and responsibility of state governments and the local council authorities.
“The cooperation of the state government and the local councils is needed to ensure that the projects requested by the public can be implemented immediately based on the principles of best value for money,” Rafizi said.
He said the IKR initiative is also meant to help small contractors benefit from these projects.
The public can still submit their applications to the Economy Ministry through the IKR website, he added. - Mkini
