Govt may work with cooperatives to expand Rahmah concept

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is studying the possibility of strategic partnerships with cooperative shops in expanding the concept of Rahmah sales.

According to its deputy minister Fuziah Salleh, the proposal was made following the success of the Rahmah sales implemented under the Madani government.

“There are suggestions to bring back shops like the KR1M but we are studying the matter.

“Besides that, there are also suggestions to make cooperative shops the strategic partners in expanding the concept of the Rahmah sales.

“This is because (working with) cooperative shops is more sustainable and last time the KR1M was not sustainable.

“Even if we were to do so, we have to ensure it is sustainable, can last a long time, and does not fail midway,” she said.

Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh previously proposed for the government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to reintroduce the concept of KR1M to lighten the people’s burden due to the rising cost of living.

KR1M was introduced under former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak in 2011 to help the public as well as small and medium-scale entrepreneurs.

However, the initiative only lasted six years and in 2017, they were closed down after the contract with the operator, Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad, ended.

In 2018, KR1M was restructured as KR1M 2.0 with a target of 50 shops.

Under the Pakatan Harapan federal administration in 2019, KR1M was proposed to be rebranded as the Consumer Economic Shop Initiative (i-KeeP), but that did not last long either. - Mkini
