Only challenge is ensuring voters return for polls, says Pang

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, Pang Sock Tao, is confident about her chances of helping the coalition retain the state seat in Selangor.

However, she believes that the only challenge the coalition faces is in ensuring voters return to vote, Bernama reported.

“Our only challenge now is to attract outside voters to come back to vote,” she was quoted as saying.

She also dismissed criticism of her status as a “non-local” candidate.

According to Pang, it was not an issue because she was no stranger to the constituency having followed the former assemblyman, the late Lee Kee Hiong, on her rounds.

She was speaking at a press conference following an event to set up a new DAP branch for the Malay community in Hulu Selangor. The event was also attended by DAP deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo.

Asked about the reception from Malay voters in the constituency, Pang said it has been “very good”.

“So far, I have been to the Malay areas around Batang Kali and their response has been very good.

“Many have given me words of encouragement and it has given me confidence that I can defend the KKB seat,” she said.

Pang, who is from DAP, will be facing three other candidates in the fight for the Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat – Hulu Selangor Bersatu acting chief Khairul Azhari Saut, who is running on a Perikatan Nasional ticket, Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Hafizah Zainuddin and independent candidate, Nyau Ke Xin.

The Election Commission has set May 11 as the polling day with early voting taking place on May 7.

The constituency is a mixed seat with the 40,226 registered voters split almost evenly between Malay voters and non-Malay voters. - FMT
