Have cheap flights to Peninsular Malaysia all year round, say Sarawak MPs

A Sarawak MP has called on the government to introduce cheap flights between East Malaysia and the peninsula all year round, saying the costly airfare is affecting many including elected representatives.

Willie Mongin (GPS-Puncak Borneo) said there were several Rahmah initiatives – programmes aimed at helping the lower income group cushion the impact of the rising cost of living – in place.

“So why can’t the government introduce a Rahmah airfare?” he asked when debating the 2025 budget in the Dewan Rakyat.

Willie’s fellow MP from Sarawak, Doris Sophia Brodie (GPS-Sri Aman), backed his call and said airfare for flights from Sabah and Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia was “ridiculously expensive.”

She claimed that an economy class ticket to fly from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur could cost as much as RM1,000.

Doris said to add insult to injury, there were frequent flight delays. - FMT
