Anwar agrees to remove RTM logo from political posts after MP's complaint

 

PARLIAMENT | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said he would remove the Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) logo from political content published on his social media accounts.

This came after an opposition MP questioned whether the government-owned broadcaster was being abused to promote Anwar’s political activities in his capacity as Pakatan Harapan chairperson.

“Firstly, on the specific issue about the RTM logo on the prime minister’s speech as a Harapan chairperson, I can fix that.

“I am not aware, but if this is true, we can make it right.

“Reporting my speech itself is not wrong, but the issue here is about the RTM logo. So I agree,” Anwar said during Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat this morning.

He was responding to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who raised concerns over RTM’s coverage of a Harapan ceramah featuring Anwar.

Fadhli pointed to a poster shared on Anwar’s Facebook last month that bore the RTM logo, arguing that the public broadcaster should cover only Anwar’s activities in his capacity as prime minister.

Anwar backs Media Council oversight

Meanwhile, on press freedom, Anwar pledged that journalists would not be subjected to arbitrary investigations.

He told the Dewan Rakyat that complaints involving media practitioners should first be referred to the Malaysia Media Council.

“Media practitioners are still bound by the law, but I agree that journalists should not be unnecessarily dragged into investigations by government departments.

“That’s why we now have the Media Council; if you have any issue about reporters... this past year we don’t have any case involving journalists despite many of their reports not sitting well with many parties.

“Our decision to establish the Media Council has made things easier because if there are any excesses or misconduct by the media, the matter can be referred to the Media Council,” he said. - Mkini
