The health minister says he is working with the finance ministry to expedite the absorption of contract pharmacists into permanent positions.

As of July, 3,545 contract pharmacists were still serving with the health ministry, while another 115 were on the reserve list or awaiting permanent appointments, health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said.
He expressed hope that the appointment process would be expedited to enable these pharmacists to enter the permanent service, Bernama reported him as saying.
The Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS) had called on the government to clarify the status of contract pharmacists and provide a clear pathway for those awaiting permanent appointments.
This followed the government’s decision to absorb all contract doctors and those who finish their housemanship.
MPS president Amrahi Buang said contract pharmacists continued to face uncertainty regarding permanent appointment, career progression and their long-term future within the public healthcare service.
He urged the government to establish a transparent timeline and mechanism for the permanent recruitment of eligible pharmacists.
On nurses, Dzulkefly said the ministry was expediting nurse recruitment and strengthening efforts to retain those already in service through improved welfare support and career advancement opportunities to address the migration of nurses abroad.
He said the measures include salary adjustments under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), as well as incentives and allowances for those eligible, including an increase in the post-basic incentive from RM100 to RM200 a month.
Launching the National Liver Health Initiative Roadmap 2026-2030 in Kuala Lumpur today, Dzulkefly said other measures included maintaining the 42-hour working week for nurses on shift duty, expanding training and promotion opportunities, and offering greater flexibility in placements through a mutual exchange system.
He said the ministry no longer recruited nurses on a contract basis, with all new recruits offered permanent appointments. - FMT
