Bill to amend Employment Act withdrawn

KUALA LUMPUR: A Bill to amend the Employment Act was withdrawn from a second reading in Parliament Tuesday, for further changes to be made.

Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Maznah Mazlan withdrew the Bill, which was tabled on July 8.

Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, when contacted, said the amendment Bill was withdrawn to make further changes and include more amendments.

He did not disclose details. However, Dr Subramaniam said the Bill would be re-tabled at this Parliament meeting.

The proposed amendments cover sexual harassment, maternity benefits and others.

Asked if the withdrawal of the Bill was related to a nationwide picket being organised by Socialist Party Malaysia (PSM) in seven places at 5.30pm Tuesday, Dr Subramaniam said no.

PSM had called for a picket to reject the proposed amendments, describing them as the worst made to labour laws.
