“Those UMNO people who want to return the money en masse ...may bank in the money to our welfare fund," said Lo' Lo, adding that the money would be used to help and change the lives of troubled teenagers and women through the party’s Caring Squad Programme.
She was responding to recent allegations by UMNO and right-wing group Perkasa, spearheaded by their mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia, that the financial aid for the elderly from the Penang state government was actually derived from gambling profits.
Last week, UMNO's Bayan Baru division chief Abdul Rahim Saibu gathered some 50 teary-eyed elderly individuals, announcing that they were returning the RM100 'compassionate allowance' received from the Penang state government.
Yesterday, PAS's Mohamad Sabu slammed UMNO's hypocritical actions, reminding the public that it was Barisan Nasional led by UMNO which had approved licences for the present gambling industry, represented by such companies as SportsToto, Magnum and Genting.
On the other hand, DAP Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua, in a stinging criticism, challenged UMNO leaders to return their salaries to the Federal treasury to prove they were principled Muslims, saying their salaries' source was even more dubious than what had been claimed in Penang.
