Penang Gerakan chief escapes no-confidence vote 145-174

Malaysia Chronicle

Penang Gerakan chief Teng Hock Nan narrowly escaped a no-confidence vote but insiders say the close call is the writing on the wall for this party stalwart, a loyalist of embattled president Koh Tsu Koon, who himself is expected to be challenged for the party’s topmost job when elections fall due next year.

At Sunday’s extraordinary general meeting that began at 10.30am, 322 out of 393 delegates turned up – much higher than expected, and confirming that the dissatisfaction felt against Hock Nan was not isolated to a disgruntled group.

Party watchers also say it is a clear slap in the face for Tsu Koon – a show of protest by members that he was neglecting Gerakan and putting his federal Cabinet position ahead of the party's interest and what it should be working on to get back into voters' favor.

At the end of counting, 145 of the Penang delegates voted in favor of the no-confidence vote, while 174 were against it. There was one spoilt vote.
