Proposal to make English second official language of Penang

(Bernama) -- A backbencher today suggested that the DAP government of Penang consider making English the second official language of the state in view of the desire to make George Town an international city.

Jagdeep Singh Deo (DAP-Datuk Keramat) said English was also important because it was the lingua franca in most countries of the world.

"I am not dismissing Bahasa Malaysia as the national language and official language of the country, but English is also important, and I ask the state government to consider making it the second official language in Penang," he said during the debate on the Supply Bill 2011 in the state assembly.

Jagdeep Singh also suggested that the state government name several roads in the state after veteran leaders from the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) pact in recognition of their contribution to politics.

"The previous state government had taken the initiative to name several roads after political leaders, one case being Jalan Yap Chor Ee. We can perhaps name a road in Butterworth after a veteran leader from PR," he said.

Tsim Tze Tzin (PKR-Pantai Jerejak) suggested that the state government formulate a policy to encourage the construction of affordable houses to enable the people in Penang own comfortable homes.

"The problem is that the gap between luxury and low-cost houses is so wide; the cost of luxury houses is so high and the condition of low-cost houses is so pathetic. We should focus on building houses which the Penang people need," he said.

He suggested that an affordable house should be of 1,000 sq ft and sell for between RM100,000 and RM200,000.

Tsim also suggested that the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) focus more on building affordable houses with comfortable surroundings.

He said the housing commission to be set up should monitor price speculation.
