Saifuddin: Amid the noise, only 6 complaints received

Saifuddin
Malaysia Chronicle

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution has confirmed that only 6 complaints on the national leadership polls have been received by so far by the central election committee, of which 2 came from agents appointed by Zaid Ibrahim.

Zaid has claimed of widespread electoral fraud in a move aimed at tarring PKR's historic direct elections.

The former Umno leader is believed to have his own political motives and widely expected to leave PKR soon. He joined the party led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim in 2008 and many expect him to head back to the BN after failing to wrest PKR from Anwar.

Zaid has been caught making many sweeping and inaccurate statements of late. The latest clarification from Saifuddin is another example. Saifuddin told reporters on Tuesday that for the entire party polls - which includes all the office-bearing positions at 205 divisions throughout the country - a total of 170 complaints were received.

As for the balloting of the national leadership positions which is still on-going, only 6 complaints have been received. The positions being contested include the deputy presidency, 4 vice-presidencies, 25 supreme council memberships, committee posts at the Women and Youth wings.

The secretary-general dismissed calls by Zaid and another aspirant for the No. 2 post, Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, to cancel or postpone the voting. Mustaffa had alleged 162 complaints, and like Zaid, has demanded that balloting for the national leadership, which has a final two rounds to go, be stopped.

Both Zaid and Mustaffa have been accused of being sore losers. Mustaffa has obtained only 1,181 votes and Zaid 3,410. Both are unlikely to be able to catch up with third contestant, Azmin Ali, who has garnered 4,378 votes.

“Amid this noise outside, the central election committee only received six official complaints,” said Saifuddin, adding that two of the complaints were received from Zaid’s agents.

“What are six complaints if we can handle 170 reports during the divisions’ annual meeting.”

The same exit strategy as Zul Noordin

Saifuddin also confirmed he has not received any official notification from either Mustaffa or Zaid on their intention to pull out from the contest. Mustaffa has given PKR a 48-hour deadline to defer the elections.

Zulkifli Noordin
Zaid has already publicly announced he wants to withdraw from the contest and will quit all his party posts. Yet he continues to poke fire and also refuses to hand in official notification.

He has been accused of adopting the same exit strategy used by Kulim Bandar Baru MP Zulkifli Noordin, who was eventually sacked for indiscipline. Ironically, it was Zaid who at that time had called for Zul's scaking.

“Administratively, we can only act upon receiving an official complaint. If we are asked to stop within 48 hours, where is the memorandum? As of 3.40pm (Tuesday), we not received any complaint from Mustaffa Kamil Ayub,” Saifuddin told a press conference.

He also slammed Zaid for creating the ruckus but failing to furnish any evidence to the secretariat. Zaid has claimed he had video evidence of alleged fraud and vote-rigging.

“As a responsible party member, he must surrender the evidence to the secretariat,” said Saifuddin.
