Ex-CMs agree 'ketuanan Melayu' not for Sabah

By Luke Rintod

KOTA BELUD: Two former Sabah chief ministers Said Salleh and Bernard Dompok want the phrase "ketuanan Melayu" (Malay supremacy) banished from the political landscape in Sabah.

It is seldom that the two, one from Umno and the other the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) president, see eye-to-eye.

"Ketuanan Melayu does not arise in Sabah. Sabahan politicians do not subscribe to politics of domination by race," said Salleh when asked to comment on Dompok's statement on the issue.

Dompok, at Upko's annual convention last week, criticised the propagation of "ketuanan Melayu" in the peninsular and even by certain parties in Sabah.

Salleh, who is Sabah Umno liaison deputy chief, in a text reply from Penang said, he agreed with Dompok's contention that “ketuanan Melayu” should not be the way in diverse Sabah.

"We have more than 30 ethnic groups. We have political differences but we all reject any attempt to propagate politics of racial superiority," said the president of Usbo, the Bajau-Sama society.

"This kind of politics will disunite the people," he warned.

Salleh just weeks ago had a meeting with Upko secretary-general, Madius Tangau, on issues affecting Sabah. - FMT
