Statistics prove Malays not sidelined, says Guan Eng

The Penang state government released statistics today to show that Malay contractors have been getting almost all projects under the DAP Administration.

The state’s record shows that 94 per cent of the state’s Public Works Department (PWD) contracts were awarded to Malay contractors while the Department of Drainage and Irrigation awarded all of its projects to businesses from that community.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the figures were released in response to Malay Contractors Association deputy president Datuk Mohamed Fadzill Hassan’s allegation that the community was only awarded with projects of insignificant value.

“The numbers prove that Umno contractors such as Datuk Mohamad Fadzil have been unhappy with the state government and Pakatan Rakyat as they can no longer be awarded contracts like in the previous administration,” said Lim in a statement today.

The projects, which were awarded between January 2008 to last November, are worth about RM70 million.

“If Datuk Mohamad is a God-fearing man, I hope he will apologise and retract his allegations against the Pakatan Rakyat Penang government,” said the DAP secretary-general.

Mohamed Fadzill had said yesterday that the projects awarded to the Malay community might be of insignificant value to the state’s total projects despite getting 70 per cent of the government’s jobs.

In an Utusan Malaysia report, he also challenged Lim to provide details of the projects.

“If Guan Eng wants to prove something by citing the high percentage, please state the value of the projects so the public can get the real picture of the projects distribution,” said Mohamed Fadzill as quoted by the Umno-owned newspaper.

Today Lim accused Mohamed Fadzill of being an Umno contractor with no capability to compete without political support.

“The competent, accountable and transparent administration has been successful in dignifying the Malay contractors with open tender system,” said Lim.

“Those who can’t compete are weak and stupid Umno contractors who rely on political connections to survive as contractors,” he added.

Lim had said that Malay contractors were getting more than 70 per cent of the state’s contracts.

“In Penang the PR government works together with Class F contractors who are all Malays for contracts below RM200,000. For contracts above RM200,000 there are open tenders where over 70 per cent is won by Malay contractors,” said Lim last weekend.

“Clearly it is not Malay contractors that cannot compete, only UMNO ones. Just because we do not work with UMNO contractors do not mean we do not work with Malays,” he added.

Lim Administration has been subjected to continuous attacks by Umno-linked organisations for allegedly discriminating against the Malay community.

Last August, Lim was accused of barring Malay traders from opening the Ramadhan bazaar in Komtar, an allegation which was later proven to be false. - Malaysian Insider
