Yesterday, Datuk Seri Samy Vellu finally resigned as MIC President after serving for 31 years while had almost all this political life being a Cabinet Minister serving the Works and Telecommunication ministries.
It had always been a tradition of the Barisan Nasional federal government to bestow the "TUNSHIP" on the leaders of their 'big brothers' once they are greeted 'farewell' from active political life. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, TunDr Ling Liong Sik, Tun Dr Lim Keng Yaik, Tun V T Sambanthan, to name a few, had be bestowed the Tun title after gracefully leaving political and going on 'retirement'.
To be fair, Datuk Seri Samy Vellu should be given a TUNSHIP.
Another factor of importance is that the Indian community in Malaysia is watching to see whether their so-called ' Indian Champion' will be treated equally or just left while treating him as a second class which Malaysian Indians have all the time have been claiming.
Datuk Seri Samy Vellu had really contributed to the nation by building highways for which he is always remembered as "toll Samy" and many other infrastructures in the works and telecommunication field. Its true he has his faults, being arrogant and gangster mentality.
During his beginning years, he was marvellous, but after some time he was a 'burden' to the community. Only those really close to him received the 'goodies'. Projects to uplift the Indian community failed - Maika Holdings. Indian affairs- temple demolition - he had a 'tidak-apa' attitude while on many occasions even supported their call and also sent his MIC gangsters to harm them. Anyone who oppose him was treated a traitor and was harmed and threatened by his gangsters.
Only failure which I am sure he will never be able to overcome is the Hindraf protest of 2007. Datuk Seri Samy Vellu and his men never expected the huge turnout but even after been badly treated, with ISA arrest, police butality, chemical-water spray, he never bothered to assist. Then came the fatal blow, the great Tsunami 2008, where almost every MIC candidate including himself lost the general elections.
Every human being has his faults. Datuk Seri Samy Vellu's faults, we will really know once he tells us. For sure, Datuk Seri Samy Vellu will pay for all the sins he did for the community that supported him whole-heartedly. Let that be with him and GOD.
Rising from an office boy with determination and hard working had achieved an architectural degree while working in the same architectural firm and later joining politics and becoming a Minister, should be a inspiring attitude Malaysians on the whole must cultivate.
The nation especially the Indian community is awaiting for the BN leader (PM Datuk Seri Najib) to announce that their once-strongman and blue-eye boy, Datuk Seri Samy Vellu will be bestowed the TUNSHIP.
