Barisan Nasional needs to be in power to enable the people's interests to come first, not for the coalition's interests, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He said because only the BN could bring progress for the nation, the people should put only capable people in the right places.
"We (BN) are not power crazy, but want power so that the people will be the priority. If the people continue believe in and support the BN, in 10 years Malaysia will be a high-income nation," he said at a "Prime Minister with the People" gathering held at a public field in Taman Sri Pinang, Tikam Batu here Thursday.
He said if incapable people who only knew how to make empty promises were chosen as leaders, the country would collapse.
According to him, the winds of change were blowing strongly, showing people throughout the country wanted the BN to continue to rule the country and be in control of Putrajaya.
Najib also reminded Umno leaders at the division level to always maintain unity and teamwork so that the party continued to remain strong.
"I ask everyone to be united, if we fight among ourselves, it will be difficult to wrest back the states we lost to the opposition," he said.
Some 10,000 people from the various races turned up at the function to hear the prime minister speak.
Thursday night, Najib will join the Indian community in celebrating Thaipusam at the Subramania Swami Devastanam temple in Jalan Sekerat here.
Earlier, Najib, who is on a one day visit to Kedah, had held a meeting with Umno and BN component party leaders from the state.
