Police report lodged over alleged rape by a minister

A report was lodged at the Seremban police headquarters today over an allegation that a Cabinet minister had raped his Indonesian maid more than three years ago.

A representative of a PKR-linked group called Malaysian Youth Solidarity (SAMM), Norazizi Aziz, lodged the report based on a document that has been circulating on the Internet since late last month.

“The police report was made to urge the police to open investigation papers and to start investigation. SAMM is willing to take the responsibility of assisting the police in its investigation,” said SAMM in a statement.

SAMM also named the minister, who is still serving in the Najib administration.

The group, led by Rembau PKR chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin, said the case would worsen ties with Indonesia if not handled properly.

“SAMM calls for an independent and transparent investigation by the authorities without any interference by senior leaders, as previously alleged,” said SAMM.

“No leader in the world could prevent justice from being upheld, but unfortunately in Malaysia there were senior leaders that tried to cover up a rape case,” it added.

The allegation, which first surfaced late last month, claims a minister raped his maid while he was part of the Abdullah administration in 2007.

Tun Abdullah Badawi, who stepped down in April 2009, was also accused by several pro-Umno blogs of attempting to cover up the case.

The case was said to have been uncovered the same year it took place by Migrant Care, an NGO with close ties to senior PAS leaders.

A report by Migrant Care containing, among others, an interview with the alleged rape victim has also been circulated.

The NGO had reportedly confirmed the accusation based on its own investigation but it said the maid, who has since returned to Indonesia, did not want to be disturbed. - Malaysian Insider
