KUCHING: Speculation is rife that party-less Pelagus assemblyman, Larry Sng, may be joining Sarawak PKR after his father Sng Chee Hua was seen having breakfast with PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim yesterday.
This is not first time Sng senior has been seeing Anwar.
Since Anwar’s arrival here over the weekend, Sng has been seen with him a number of times prompting observers to think that he was negotiating with Anwar for his son to join PKR.
However, when reporters queried his “meeting” with Sng, all Anwar said was: “I do not know why a private breakfast like that became an issue.
“I only asked about his family. No serious political discussions took place.
“Jimmy Donald, John Tenewi Nuek (PKR vice-president) and Dominique Ng (state assemblyman for Padungan) were there. I know some people have reservations with whom I have breakfast.”
Anwar said people need to be mature in politics, pointing out that in politics one should “befriend everyone”.
“You should take a view that you befriend everyone. But you must exercise your rights to preserve the interest of the party.
“That is important. That is our principle. We talk and meet and discuss with everybody. We stand to defend the principle of the party. No compromise,” he said.
Larry has been without a party since April 2009 after he was sacked by Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president James Masing following a protracted leadership tussle.
Since then, Larry has been trying to knock on the doors of other BN component parties such as Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP)and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP), but so far the response has been cool.
No choice
Meanwhile, Masing has made sure that Larry will not defend the seat on a BN ticket. Pelagus is one of nine seats given to PRS to defend under the BN partnership spirit.
“He can contest as an independent candidate… we cannot stop him,” said Masing.
Masing’s stand has left Larry with no other option except to join PKR. Bearing this in mind, Anwar’s “breakfast” with the wealthy senior Sng has fuelled speculations.
Anwar, however, denied that the senior Sng had a role to play in PKR.
“No, he (Sng senior) has no position in PKR. I am not sure if he is a member of the party. I know there are people who want to capitalise on the issue.
“The important thing is that there is no discussion. But I will welcome anyone who wants to help us,” he added.
There are widespread rumours that Sng is poised to play a major role in the selection of candidates for the coming Sarawak election.
“He has a list of 15 persons including his son Larry to be PKR candidates, and he will sponsor them,” said one of Sng’s aides.
Sng was also active during the PKR elections in December last year. - FMT
