Discrepancies in CCTV clocks, say forensic analysts

February 28, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — Several discrepancies were found in closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the Desa Damansara condominium here, resulting in inconsistencies with the timing of their recordings, forensic analysts testified today.

Mohd Zabri Adil Talib, section chief of the Cyber Securities division, and Mohd Sharizuan Omar admitted that there were errors in the CCTVs’ clocks in the guard house area as well as the management office of the condominium.

The CCTVs in the guard house showed footages of cars and individuals entering the condominium, while the CCTVs in the management office showed footage of the lift area.

The two officers, along with another colleague had been summoned by DSP Jude Pereira on June 30, 2008 to help the police in “cloning” the CCTV recordings of footage taken on June 26, when complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan alleged that he was sodomised by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Zabri said that the CCTV clock in the management office was behind by 19 minutes in relation to Malaysian standard time.

The estimation of the standard Malaysian time was done via comparison with the official Sirim website.

“So 19 minutes must be added to every mention of the time,” said Zabri in reply to a question by Deputy Public Prosecutor Hanafiah Zakaria.

Sharizuan echoed his colleague’s remarks and said that, upon examination, the CCTV clock in the guard house was found to be 9 minutes and 15 seconds slow compared to standard Malaysian time.

“(The discrepancy) is due to the CCTV computer setting. The timing was wrong on both clocks,” said Sharizuan.

The High Court had on February 24 viewed closed circuit images showing individuals resembling Anwar and Saiful entering and leaving the Desa Damansara condominium on June 26, 2008.

ASP Fauziah Che Mat, a police audio-video analyst told the court earlier that she had been tasked by DSP Jude Pereira on July 3, 2008 to identify two cars bearing the plate numbers WMK6 and WPK5925 via CCTV recordings obtained from the condominium.

Fauziah said today that Pereira was there when she had carried out the task of identifying “individuals” and “cars.”

She added that it was Pereira who had identified the individuals and cars on the CCTV recordings, not her.

Fauziah also said that several copies of the original recordings were made for the prosecution team.

“I was told to identify seven cars and seven individuals,” she added.

The trial will resume this afternoon.

Saiful had complained that his ex-boss had sodomised him at a luxury condominium in upper-class Bukit Damansara here on June 26, 2008.

Saiful, now aged 25, has never named anyone else.

Anwar, the 63-year-old PKR de facto leader, is currently facing sodomy charges for the second time in his life.

He has denied the charge, describing it as “evil, frivolous lies by those in power” when the charge was read out to him.

He is charged under section 377B of the Penal Code and can be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years’ jail and whipping upon conviction. The trial is taking place 18 months after Anwar was charged in court in August 2008.

He was charged with sodomy and corruption in 1998 after he was sacked from the Cabinet and was later convicted and jailed for both offences.

He was freed in September 2004 and later resurrected his political career by winning back his Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in a by-election in 2008, which had been held in the interim by his wife.

He led the opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, to a historic sweep of five states and 82 parliamentary seats in Election 2008. - Malaysian Insider
