TEMERLOH, Feb 13 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today that Barisan Nasional will choose a candidate who can continue the good work of Kerdau state assemblyman Datuk Zaharuddin Abu Kassim who died here yesterday.

“This area will continue to be developed. We will choose a successor who can continue the struggle of the late Datuk Zaharuddin,” he told reporters here after paying his last respects at the house of the assemblyman in Kerdau.

Zaharuddin died at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Hospital at 7.15pm yesterday at age 63 after suffering a heart attack at his house.

The prime minister regarded the death of Zaharuddin as a personal loss.

“I have known him for 30 years. He was very close to me. I have lost a very good friend,” Najib said.

Speaker of the Pahang legislative assembly Datuk Seri Wan Mohamed Razali Wan Mahussin said he will formally inform the Election Commission of the vacancy in Kerdau tomorrow.

He said he had informally told the commission of the vacancy and would follow that up with a letter as soon as he received the official confirmation of death. — Bernama
