KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 — Putrajaya’s performance agency today claimed Penang had benefitted from its Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), citing investments from technology multinational Cisco Systems as proof.

The Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) said that 95 Entry Point Projects (EPPs) will be implemented in Penang over the next 10 years through initiatives from government-linked companies (GLCs), private local private sectors and state agencies including the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) and Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida).

“Where inclusiveness is concerned, ETP aims to share the wealth of the country with all segments of the population, whether urban or rural, regardless of gender and in all regions, including Penang,” Pemandu said in a statement responding to Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s complaints that the state did not benefit from development programmes drawn up by the federal government.

The DAP secretary-general had claimed that none of 19 EPPs implemented so far had targeted the Pakatan Rakyat-ruled state.

Last year, Cisco announced that it will transfer parts of its manufacturing process and skills from the United States to Penang.

Pemandu pointed out that Mida was able to contribute to an inflow of RM12.2 billion of investment involving 28 projects in Penang last year, more than any other state.

The federal agency also said the state has been identified as a potential location for the EPPs such as the establishment of a Premium Outlet under tourism in the National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs).

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had also dismissed Lim’s allegation that the state failed to gain from development programmes drawn up by Putrajaya.

The state’s former chief minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon has also claimed that the achievements enjoyed by the current Penang government were due to the efforts by the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) administration. - Malaysian Insider
