KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today that Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) will hold a rare convention on March 5 ahead of state polls which must be called by July.

In the clearest sign that BN is prepared for the state elections, the coalition chairman also said that Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is already ‘inspired’ to dissolve the Sarawak assembly.

“We have to ask the chief minister. He is already inspired now,” said Najib when asked about the date for the Sarawak state election.

“He has received certain inspiration,” he said after chairing the BN supreme council meeting here.

Najib also said that he would be visiting Sarawak in the middle of next month with other senior BN leaders.

He also indicated that the Sarawak BN campaign would begin in the middle of next month with his visit to the state along with other senior BN leaders.

“I have been to Sarawak twice, including a visit to Belaga. Those visits were also part of my initiative to go to the ground,” said Najib when asked about his plans to tour the country made during the Umno assembly last October.

During his visit to Sarawak in January, Najib announced an allocation of RM62 million for the construction of a rural road linking Belaga to Bakun.

“I am also scheduled to visit Sarawak in the middle of March, many of us will be there,” said Najib.

Last week, Najib was also in Sarawak to meet with the state BN assemblymen to discuss the coalition’s progress in all the constituencies.

The last Sarawak state election was held in May 2006 when BN lost seven of the 71 seats to the opposition.

The current term of the state legislative assembly expires in July.

Taib who has been in power for almost 30 years was said to have suggested that the state polls be held jointly with the federal elections which are speculated to happen this year.

However, The Malaysian Insider understands that Najib is not in favour of this as he wants his economic plans to show results before calling for a snap election. - Malaysian Insider
