Ummi Hafilda now a Missus?

Malaysia's most famous political 'vamp' Ummi Halfilda, who once confessed to having a crush on Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim before incriminating him for sodomy with another person, has gotten married to a top official in the Iranian embassy here.

A family member told reporters at the sidelines of a press briefing the 44-year old tied the knot last September, just months before whizzing back into the local political scene with a renewed verbal onslaught against Anwar and her own brother Azmin Ali, the PKR deputy president.

"An Ayatollah was visiting the mission and he solemnised the marriage which took place inside the embassy itself," the family member said.Malaysia Chronicle was not able to contact Ummi for her response.

At one time the most hated woman in Malaysia for her perceived treachery and in-your-face glamour, Ummi was among witnesses that testified against Anwar some 12 years ago.

In a trial that attracted worldwide condemnation for its injustice, Anwar was found guilty of sodomising his wife's chaffeur and jailed 6 years. The opposition leader has denied the manifestly fabricated charges.

During the long drawn-out hearing, Ummi not only admitted she had tried to attract Anwar's attention but also declared in court that she was still a "virgin".

Assassin

Thereafter, Ummi sanked into the woodwork, reappearing intermittently to hit out at selected leaders, sparking widespread speculation that she was for hire as a 'political assassin'.

In the latest incident, Ummi has denied having any ulterior motives, claiming her sole purpose in raking up old stories against Anwar and Azmin was because she wanted to "save Malaysia".

She also challenged Anwar to a public debate, but he has rejected what he described as her "mosquito" dare.

There is still much interest in Ummi although few people believe in her words. Most Malaysians are interested to know about the scandals in her private and political life but only if they time to spare. In January this year, she threatened to file several hundred-million ringgit suits against Anwar and Azmin.

"The rumor mill is that this time she was in contact with supporters of Najib. Maybe she came out with all the old and lame stories because they wanted to muddy Anwar who was gaining public sympathy after being suspended from Parliament for APCO. But if they paid her any money, it would have been wasted. The whole thing didn't work," a PKR source told Malaysia Chronicle. - Malaysia Chronicle
