Another Najib show on Saturday? Probe Taib, impound his wealth if serious

Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud may step down after the state elections but to what extent can it appease the people especially as the announcement widely expected to be made in the presence of Prime Minister Najib Razak tomorrow reeks more of a done deal, signed, sealed and delivered to ensure that the 74-year old and his family will remain forever protected from any prosecution at either state or federal level.

"It will turn out to be another Najib sham. If it goes through, it will be unveiled as his 'gift' to the Sarawak people. But we say, if you want to help the Sarawakians, impound Taib's wealth, seize his assets, prosecute him to the highest courts and show Malaysians that no one is safe from such excesses of power abuse and corruption," PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

"But can Najib do that. Is he himself so clean?"

There is also concern that instead of relinquishing power, Taib will be appointed as Governor of Sarawak, a post that is largely ceremonial but in Taib's hands will hugely influential as it will allow him to broker all deals that occur in the corridors of power.

Najib and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will be in Sarawak tomorrow to kickstart their Umno meet-the-people tour of all states in the country.

Opposition swings into action mode

According to Bernama, Taib will announce on Saturday when he will dissolve the state assembly. Speculation has been rife that polls will be held in April or May as his 5-year term expires in July.

"Wait one more day," Taib told reporters when asked if it was true the state legislative assembly would be dissolved on Monday to pave the way for April elections.

Speculation has swirled since last year that he would announce his retirement to 'boost' his coalition's chances. But while massively unpopular, the rest of his team are not regarded in a much better light than he is.

Taib is widely expected to hand over to his deputy Alfred Jabu Numpang, but Jabu may only be the seat warmer for Taib's cousin Effendi Norwawi.

There are 71 seats in the Sarawak state assembly. Taib's BN has 62 seats, DAP six, PKR and SNAP have one each while an Independent candidate holds the remaining seat.

"Don't underestimate us. Pakatan has been preparing well and we are just waiting to press the 'go' button. We have at least 70 per cent chance of denying Taib two-thirds majority and even wresting the state government," reiterated PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli. - Malaysia Chronicle
