Palanivel, Mohan chummy in birthday do

Party president G Palanivel and Youth leader T Mohan appear to have buried the hatchet over the 'back-to-estate' tiff.

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president G Palanivel and Youth chief T Mohan appear to be on good terms after the row over the “back-to-estate” proposal.

Palanivel took time off to attend Mohan’s 38th birthday party organised by MIC Youth at the MIC headquarters here today.

“He has not told me how old he is but he looks like he is 16 to me,” Palanivel joked.

“I wish him all the best in his future political journey.”

Mohan dressed in a blue “jippa” was flanked by his wife S Logeswary and his three sons. His parents were also present.

Some 300 people including senior party leaders attended the function. Also spotted were Youth adviser S Vell Paari, Wanita leader K Komala, and former Youth chief SA Vigneswaran.

The ties between Palanivel and Mohan turned soured when the latter did not see eye to eye with the former’s “back-to-estate” proposal.

Palanivel, who is also Plantation Industry and Commodities Deputy Minister, had proposed that poor Indians who can’t make ends meet to start anew at estates managed by government-linked plantations such as Sime Darby until they are financially stable.

However, the proposal was shot down by many including Mohan. Subsequently a war-of-words arose between Mohan and those who backed Palanivel.

Mohan contended that working in estates would not guarantee a bright future for the community. Instead, he proposed that the government provide a Felda-like land development scheme for the community. - FMT
