S’wak deputy CM gets an earful at coffee shop

Stephen Tiong

A commotion broke out when Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Dr George Chan made his rounds at the wet market in Miri and coffee shops in the vicinity yesterday.

Chan, who is also Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president, had a shouting match with patrons in coffee shops and the wet market.

“He tried to shake hands with the patrons and the shoppers, but they ignored him.

“Instead, they asked him what happened to the oil and gas money from Sarawak and why the money was not used to stabilise the prices of goods,” PKR Wanita vice-president Voon Shiak Ni said today.

NONEVoon was in Miri yesterday, accompanying PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin, state PKR information chief See Chee How and Miri PKR chief Dr Michael Teo, who, among other things, staged a protest over the escalating prices of essential goods.

“We heard an angry parton holding Chan’s hand, asking him to explain the rising cost of living. And then the commotion started,” she said.

“When Dr Chan could not give a satisfactory answer, the coffee shop patron became angrier.

“Luckily, he was quickly pulled away by his assistants. Then, the people told us about a similar row at a coffee shop nearby, so we rushed there, but Chan and his entourage had left.

“We heard the same thing at the wet market, that Chan was not welcomed by the people,” she said, adding that shoppers there refused to shake hands with him or acknowledge his presence.
